I am using the Java Utility for AY 2020-2021 from the IT website's downloads section to fill the ITR-2 form offline. When I try to save the completed XML file in order to upload it on the IT portal, the Save File dialog of this Java Utility does not offer any name for the file. Does this mean I can save the XML file by any name & then upload it? Or is there some naming convention I should follow? If any name is allowed what file naming convention is a good practice to follow that is accepted by the IT website?

Thank you, R Seetharaman Sir, for replying. However, the final XML file while being saved does not offer any filename as you said. It is blank & we have to enter the name.

Any file name should be acceptable as the name as such may not be relevant but the file format .xml is (though I have not tried renaming .xml so far). ITR utility, usually names the file automatically and the file name contained date, time, pan and year. You may have any other naming convention too (like pan, year, form no. date, time etc).

Hello Poornima. Thanks for the reply. I thought so too that the Utility would name the file. It doesn't. I used ITR2_2020 Java Utility. While saving the final file the save dialog box is empty waiting for you to type the filename.

@Poornima Oh yes. I just wanted to know if there is some file naming convention that is required to be followed. However, I have found a solution. I filled in a mock form in the Excel Sheet utility for the same year & tried saving it. The Excel Utility does, in fact, offer a name while saving. I am using that to name the XML file created by Java Utility.
For others reading this, it is in this format.
ITR2_Pan-Card-No.xml
For example if your Pan No is ABCDE1234F then you may name your file as
ITR2_ABCDE1234F.xml
Though, I do not think this is mandatory in any way.
