22 October 2012 One of my clients , an individual, passed away in April,2012. For the year ended 31.03.12 , his turnover exceeded Rs.60 lakhs. Now his son has to e-file the return of his deceased father. I am not able to get the precise steps to be taken for e-filing by son. Will somebody explain the procedure to follow in my client's case to e-file his return. I am sorry. I didn't explain
all the nuances. Now we got digital signature in the name of the son with son's PAN. However , we have not been able to e-file the deceased's return with son's DSC. I think first the son's DSC should be registered. How is this to be done?

22 October 2012 Return can be filed by legal heir.

On the return, the name should be mentioned as “late (name of deceased) through legal heir (name of person filing)” and also submit the PAN number of legal hair and deceased.

22 October 2012 Legal heir (LH) is required to make a request through e-mail to ask@incometaxindia.gov.in mentioning the name, PAN and date of birth of the deceased and the LH.

Scanned copy of the death certificate should be attached.

On receipt of the above, LH will be enabled to file return of the deceased with the DSC of the LH.
