U/s 80gg/for claiming exemption from hra

18 December 2012 Sir,
For claiming exemption in respect of rent paid Is it compulsory that assesse has to live in that rented house. can he claim that exemption if he lives at the place of his employment on weekdays and rejoin with family at rented house only on weekends.

18 December 2012 You can claim u/s 80gg in following conditions-

1) You are not taking HRA from your employer.
2) You are living in rented house.
3) Subject to limit 2000/- pm.

But in your condition your faimily are residing there.

18 December 2012 Of course, you need to be paying rent, and for your own accommodation.
Thus, if you are paying rent for a house where your parents live, you can not claim deduction u/s 80GG. Similarly, if you are staying in a house but your spouse is paying the rent, you can not claim any deduction.
You can claim deduction for either furnished or unfurnished accommodation.
