TDS has to be made on provision or payment whichever is earlier. In this case since the provision is for sept you have to pay the TDS on 7th October.

What does the provision mean. Can you say in detail. Though the wage month is september salary payment is made on october and why do we need to pay TDS on Oct as its deducted after Oct 7.

Great question! Let me clarify what **"provision"** means in the context of TDS on salary, and how the timing works:
---
### What is "Provision" in TDS on Salary?
* **Provision means the amount you *account* as salary payable for a particular month**, even if you actually pay it later. * In accounting terms, salary for September is a **provision (liability)** on your books as of September 30, even if the cash payment happens in October. * For TDS on salary, **tax is deductible when salary is *due* or *paid*, whichever is earlier** (Section 192).
---
### Applying this to your case:
* Salary relates to **September** (provision month). * Payment happens on **October 10**. * Since the salary was **due in September**, TDS should be deducted and deposited **by October 7** (7th day of the next month). * You cannot delay TDS payment beyond October 7 just because the actual payment was made on October 10.
---
### Why is this important?
* TDS on salary is based on **month of salary liability**, not just actual payment. * The employer must **deduct TDS before or at the time of payment**, but deposit it by the 7th of the following month. * Since payment is after the 7th, you should still deposit TDS by October 7 to avoid interest or penalty.
---
### What about quarterly return?
* Quarterly return (Form 24Q) for July-Sept quarter is due by **October 15**. * You can deposit TDS by October 7 and then file return by October 15.
---
### Summary:
| Salary Month | Salary Payment Date | TDS Deduction Date | TDS Deposit Due Date | Quarterly Return Due Date | | ------------ | ------------------- | --------------------- | -------------------- | ------------------------- | | September | October 10 | September (provision) | October 7 | October 15 |

If you paid salary late (after Oct 7) without deducting TDS earlier, interest for late deposit may apply.
