18 August 2009 hi , i just read somewhere that for financial year 1.4.2009 onwards, education cess need not be deducted when deducting tax at source.. have i read it right ?

You are right. Surcharge & Cess has been removed from TDS perview with effect from 01.04.2009 vide Finance (No. 2) Act, 2009.

The general obsession with 1st Oct'09 is incorrect.
