Ramesh, Thank you for the response. However the ao has been unable to resolve the matter for over a year now.
As a background, the returns for the relevant years were filed at cpc-salary, and the relevant tax demands had also been cleared. subsequently I quit employment and these demands now appear as unpaid in my Ao's books.
I am not a tax practioner, so some handholding would be much appreciated

You can check your form 26AS status online, there you will get your tax credit availability in your PAN. and compare the return tax liability. In case you paid the demands in separate challan the same copy can be produced with the A.O to clear the notice and issue the refund
I followed your suggestions, and they tell me the outstandings pertaining to AY06 & 07 "have already been posted" in the wrong year. And suggest I pay the demand for the year in which it is dues, and will get refund for the year whrein it is wrongly credited

Yes. pay the demand and ask refund for the other years. but how ever in your Income tax return should show the refund amount please ensure the same
