I have registered myself for both the groups in May,2013 ...but i guess i will appear only for group 1 ....should this be a problem ?
And secondly i am definite about clearing group 1 - does it make sense to only give the IT/SM paper after 5 days of studies ? Will this help me to exempt the paper in Nov,2013 (Group 2 )

Event though applied for Both groups attending of one group doesn't effect the passing of such attended group or to get exemptions if any on such attended group.
To get the exemption in any certificate and eligibility to get the exempiton the condition is student must and should be attend all the subjects on that group. Thus if you not attend remaining subjects for group 2 and attending only IT & SM then you will not get the exemption eligibiltiy.
So my suggestion is you are sure regarding the qualifing of group -1 so you may get the good marks on groupp -1 and also you are saying you have to get exemption in IT & SM so you shall attend total 5 subjects and there is balance of only 2 subjects so attend that 2 subjects also if your luck is good then you can attend that two subjects well at get atleast pass marks and by comparing all the sujects of group 1 and 2 with aggregate you will get pass of IPCC. In case if either aggrigate not sufficient or not get the pass marks of any of the such two subjects in groupt -2 then you pass the first group-1(because of you are confident in first group) and as well as also get the exemption of IT & SM(you are confident in such getting of exemption).
So my suggestion is apper for both groups and for all subjects either you will pass the IPCC or you will qualify 1st group and get the exemption so it is more better and help full to you than leaving of either group-2 wholly or attending of only one paper in group-2.
So in simple words attending of only one paper or more but not all in a group doesn't get the benefit you either in way of pass or exemption.
