The demand for payment is for higher amount for which you don't agree for it but no other option you have to pay it. Under these circumstances you pay the amount under protest so that in future if you succeed you will get back the amount. Pay the tax and write a letter to the concerned that you are paying the amount under protest stating the reason for it.

01. In all APPEAL matters, there is NO any question of payment against PROTEST, for the simple reason that APPEAL itself is a PROTEST
02. There are certain instances that a extra ordinary amount is demanded e.g. Municipal Taxes, Stamp duty etc...where either Public Interest Litigation has already been filed by say Association OR a similar case is pending say Annual Ratable Value of Panchayat or Corporation, but you are NOT a party to that BUT if the PLI or the case is decided in the manner favourable to you.....you should NOT lose the claim of benefit and HENCE the payment is made under PROTEST.
