07 December 2010 Dear Sir/Madam

M,N and O are partners sharing profit and losses in the ratio of 3:2:1. P joins the firm and gets 2/10th of share in the ratio of 1:1 from M and N calculate new ratio

ANS: 12:7:5:6

Please tell how to calculate?

08 December 2010 The Answer is derived by a shortcut way like:

Particulars M N O P

Old Ration 3 2 1 -

Or we may say 3/6 2/6 1/6 -

Multiply by 5 (A) 15/30 10/30 5/30 -

New Ratio can be deducted from -1/10 -1/10 - +2/10

Multiply by 3 (B) -3/30 -3/30 - +6/30
Now (A) – (B) comes to 12/30 7/30 5/30 6/30

This is the shortcut method to solve such problems.

Hope you find this easy to understand.
