31 July 2024 To rectify the situation where you have mistakenly paid income tax into another person's account due to a wrong PAN and name, follow these steps to recover the amount:

### **Steps to Recover the Mistaken Tax Payment**

1. **Gather Documentation:**
- **Receipt of Payment:** Obtain a copy of the receipt or transaction details showing the mistaken payment. This should include the date, amount, and reference number.
- **Bank Statement:** Get a copy of your bank statement showing the debit transaction.
- **Identification Documents:** You might need to provide identification documents for verification purposes.

2. **Prepare a Request Letter:**
Draft a formal request letter addressed to the Income Tax Department. The letter should include:
- Details of the mistaken payment (amount, date, and reference number).
- The correct PAN and the correct details where the payment should have been made.
- A request for adjustment or refund of the amount paid incorrectly.
- Any supporting documents (receipt, bank statement, etc.).

3. **Contact the Income Tax Department:**
- **Online:** Log in to the [Income Tax e-filing portal](https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in) and use the "Taxpayer Services" section. Look for options related to "Rectification" or "Refund Request" and submit your request online if the portal allows.
- **Physical Submission:** Visit your local Income Tax Office or the office of the jurisdictional Assessing Officer. Submit your request letter along with the supporting documents.

4. **Follow Up:**
- After submission, keep a record of any acknowledgment or receipt provided by the Income Tax Department.
- Follow up with the department if you do not receive a response within a reasonable time frame. You may contact them by phone or email to check the status of your request.

5. **Bank Coordination:**
- If required, coordinate with your bank to ensure that the bank provides any necessary confirmation or statement related to the payment.

### **Important Points:**

- **Correction of Details:** If the tax amount has been mistakenly deposited into someone else's account, ensure that you correct the details with both the Income Tax Department and your bank to prevent similar issues in the future.
- **Timing:** Act quickly to report and rectify the mistake, as delays could complicate the recovery process.

By following these steps, you should be able to rectify the situation and recover the wrongly paid amount.
