20 July 2024 For claiming deduction under Section 80DD or Section 80U of the Income Tax Act, 1961, for disabilities, you typically require a certificate issued by a medical authority specified under the Act. Here are some steps and options you can consider:

### Section 80DD - Deduction for Rehabilitation of Handicapped Dependent Relative

1. **Medical Authority for Certificate:**
- The certificate for Section 80DD can be issued by any of the following authorities:
- A neurologist with a degree equivalent to Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Neurology (in case of neurological disabilities)
- A civil surgeon or chief medical officer in a government hospital
- A medical board constituted in a government hospital

2. **Procedure:**
- Visit a government hospital where there is a neurologist or a civil surgeon.
- Explain your requirement for a certificate under Section 80DD.
- Provide relevant medical records and information about the disability for assessment.

3. **Alternative Options:**
- If you face challenges obtaining the certificate from one hospital, consider visiting another government hospital in your area.
- Ensure that the hospital has the necessary medical professionals who can assess and certify disabilities as per the guidelines.

### Section 80U - Deduction for Self with Disability

1. **Medical Authority for Certificate:**
- The certificate for Section 80U can be issued by any of the following:
- A neurologist with a degree equivalent to Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Neurology (in case of neurological disabilities)
- A civil surgeon or chief medical officer in a government hospital
- A medical board constituted in a government hospital

2. **Procedure:**
- Similar to Section 80DD, visit a government hospital with the required medical professionals.
- Explain your disability and the need for certification under Section 80U.
- Provide medical history and details of the disability for assessment.

3. **Seeking Assistance:**
- If necessary, you can inquire with local disability support organizations or disability welfare departments for guidance on hospitals or doctors who can provide the required certification.

### Urgency and Action:

- Given the urgency, prioritize visiting a government hospital where the specified medical professionals are available.
- Explain your situation clearly to the hospital staff to expedite the certification process.
- Ensure that all required medical documentation and details are provided to facilitate the assessment.

By following these steps and exploring alternative hospitals, you should be able to obtain the necessary certificate for claiming deduction under Section 80DD or Section 80U. If you face persistent challenges, consider seeking assistance from a tax consultant or legal advisor familiar with disability-related tax deductions.
