Contact the bank they will help you.
1) with out original DD the dd will not be canceled and many cann't get refund. For cancellation of the DD following are required a) The person who draws the DD Should be go to the bank for cancellation of the DD. b) counter file of the DD in original should be produced to the bank for evidence of DD is your's. c) Original DD should be submit to the bank along with the signature of the drawer on the back side of the DD on revenue stamp.
with out the above The DD cann't canceled and refunded the money. However based on the affidavit bank can cancel the DD by confirming with the DD didn't encashed till now. So if you have the original counter file of the DD the drawer of the DD approach the bank and say the facts and ask the possible ways to cancel the DD.
2) Based on the DD no the bank can trace the DD is cashed or not from their records.
However if you also not have the DD no the bank can find the DD no based on the date of drawing of DD, amount of DD and name of the DD drawn.
My suggestion is if you have the original counter file of the DD along with it the drawer of the DD approach the bank otherwise forget about it because with out original counter file you can't do any thing for such this and no further action and forget about your money.
