Yes it is possible to study tax by self study mode. I did the same and even scored above 60.
However it would depend on person to person and also what type of exposure you are getting in your articleship.
I had a good exposure if articleship in tax and hence there were no grave problems in understanding the provisions of tax and to study in self study mode.
