What can be the purpose(s) for which SPVs can be formed? How does it actually work? If you could please explain me with a suitable example.

SPV stands for Special Purpose Vehicle,as its name suggests it is formed for achieving a particular objective,depending on the nature of its purpose it may be given not given a legal form. There is no "one-size-fits -all" answer to your querry.
