Self assessment tax and tax on regular assessment tax

what is the difference between Self assessment tax and Tax on regular assessment under income tax act?

I have received income tax demand notice, so under which head should i pay tax? 1. Self assessment tax or 2. Tax on regular assessment ?

09 January 2017 self asst means you have to calculated the tax amount that should be paid.
and in asst tax dept assessed the tax you should pay.

so in case of demand notice from income tax department, which option should i take while paying tax? whether self assessment tax or Tax on regular assessment?
