No, it is not right to mention only section, it is also necessary to write sub section also. For example, a definition of private company is given in sub section 3(1) (iii) of the Companies Act, 1956, if you write only section 3 it means you also cover definition of public company also.
I will suggest you to write sub-section in exam if you sure about it otherwise you can write, under provisions of section...... which deal with.........

Agree with Ajayji. If you are 100% sure then only you write scetion no with subsection. Otherwise write your answar as suggested by Ajayji.
