Is itr filing mandatory for retired person ?

26 March 2012 Hi,
my dad retired from central government services in 2004, he has not filed ITR since then. currently he withdraw an annual pension of 1,50,000INR. Is it necessary for him to file income tax return ? it will be peace of mind for him if you can provide a circular number or notification number for reference.

26 March 2012 SInce the basic limit for not charging an income to tax is Rs. 1.80 Lacs and Rs. 2.00 Lacs (proposed in the budget), your father is not at all required to file an ITR. The same is provided u/s 139(1)..
