When you import goods, once the goods reaches Indian Port, the importer has to pay the duty and clear the goods. The Liner will give you free days (usually 14 days) from the date of unloading for clearing the goods. After 14 days, the importer will be charged a penalty/rent by the Liner. This charge is called demurrage charges. Without paying the demurrage charges, the importer cannot clear the goods from the port.
