Error: Invalid Summary Payload in GSTR-9

This query is : Resolved

01 March 2021 After validation and during EVC verification we are facing the following error: Invalid Summary Payload

GSTIN reply ... Dear Taxpayer,
You are advised to ensure that values are reported upto two decimal places in the GSTR-9 offline utility. The error “Error! Invalid Summary payload” after uploading the JSON created from the Offline Utility of GSTR-9 is reported due to reporting values upto three decimal places instead of two decimals.

However we have not found in our form any value with 3 decimal places.

Can anybody suggest possible solution to the above problem?

21 July 2024 The error "Invalid Summary Payload" in GSTR-9 usually arises when the JSON file generated from the Offline Utility contains values that exceed two decimal places, even if the excess is in the form of zeros. Here’s how you can address this issue:

### Steps to Resolve the Issue:

1. **Review Decimal Places:**
- Double-check all values in your GSTR-9 JSON file to ensure they are formatted with no more than two decimal places. This includes not only visible values but also any hidden or calculated fields.
- Sometimes, the issue may not be apparent due to hidden calculations in formulas. Ensure all calculations are set to round or truncate to two decimal places.

2. **Inspect Line Items:**
- Go through each section and line item in the GSTR-9 offline utility. Verify that amounts like turnover, tax payable, input tax credits, etc., are all rounded or truncated correctly to two decimal places.

3. **Manual Inspection:**
- Open the JSON file in a text editor that supports syntax highlighting and carefully review each line to spot any values with more than two decimal places.
- Look particularly at subtotal calculations or any fields where calculations might have resulted in unintended decimal places.

4. **Make Corrections:**
- If you find any values with more than two decimal places, correct them by truncating or rounding off to two decimal places.
- Ensure consistency throughout the JSON file.

**Re-generate JSON File:**
- After making corrections, re-generate the JSON file from the Offline Utility of GSTR-9.
- Verify again that the new file strictly adheres to the two decimal place format.

**Upload and Verify:**
- Upload the corrected JSON file through the GST portal.
- During the EVC verification or submission process, carefully monitor for any error messages. The "Invalid Summary Payload" error should no longer appear if the decimal places issue is resolved.

### Additional Tips:

- **Use of Formulas:** If your JSON file uses formulas for calculations, ensure these formulas explicitly round or truncate results to two decimal places.
- **Hidden Fields:** Check for any fields that are not immediately visible but contribute to calculations.
- **Consult GST Helpdesk:** If the issue persists despite your efforts, consider reaching out to the GST helpdesk for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on the nature of your error and the data involved.

By ensuring all values are correctly formatted to two decimal places in your GSTR-9 JSON file, you should be able to successfully upload and verify your return without encountering the "Invalid Summary Payload" error.
