In absolute layman terms: Common Seal is made of metal and gets the name of the company embossed or engraved on the document on which it is affixed.
A rubber stamp is not a substitute to common seal. The seal is the official signature of the company and its use is restricted by the AOA of the Company. AOA of most companies would provide that the common seal should be affixed in presence of a director + one authorised signatory or at the instructions of the Board of Directors only.
