Hi all, I'd like to know the following. A senior Citizen for for the assessment year 2006-2007 had a refund of 18000 Rupees. He filed return of income within due date i.e 31st July 2006
Now It is April 2008 and he still has not refund. I want to know
(a) Whether Refunds are automatic? I mean Just file return of Income and if there is refund the Dept will give automatically
(b) Should any extra form be filed. A senior told me that form 30 should be filed. But in my office I dont remember filing it
(c) Can we file it now? I mean is there a time limit or something
(d) If we file it now, are there extra documents we should attach?

pl. check status of of refund on website given by sri sheetal metha above. if no ststus is found, you may approach the dept. directly or through your author. representative through whom you filed the return. it has happened to me also last year, when i received an intimation by dept. that i have not quoted my ECS -reference- ie- bank ACCOUNT details for direct credit of the refund amount to my bank account. after i sent the bank details, i received cheque only . these days the IT dept. is asking bank details for direct credit. soeme times refunds are delayed when we file incomplete or if we filed ITR returns not applicable to our case( a particular ITR is applicable only for certain types of assessees only) . THERE IS NO NEED TO FILE FORM 30 BY AN ASSESSEE UNTIL THE STATUS OF REFUND IS CHECKED BY YOU EITHER ON WEBSITE OR BY DIRECT APPROACH,WHEN YOU CAN YOURSELF ASK THE DEPT. IF FORM 30 IS NEEDED TO BE FILED. IF THEY SAY YES, YOU MAY THEN FILE. R.V.RAO
