13 March 2009 Dear Indranil,
In such a case not.
The deduction u/s 80D is allowed when the payment is made to GIC or any other approved insurer and that too by cheque. It is populary known as Mediclaim Scheme.

Here its a reimbusrment not a payment. therefore Not available.

13 March 2009 Even if the amount is not paid by cheque and any other mode than cash and even parents are not dependent it would have been allowed.

16 March 2009 Thanks for the reply . Further to my initial question , following is the point which requires clarification.

A company has a Group Medical Insurance Policy which is being paid off by the company for all employees based on the age & other profiles of the dependants of the individual employees . Over and above the payment made by the company , an individual employee can pay an extra amount to increase their individual insurance limits.
Can an employee get an exemption u/s 80D for the extra amount personally paid by him / her ?
Please note that even the extra amount is firstly paid by the company which is later on being reimbursed by the employee as a decution from the next month's salary

17 March 2009 If the name of the employee is mentioned the payment receipt then yes, otherwise no.
