Ravi Agarwal, Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has called on taxpayers with foreign income or assets to take advantage of the current window to amend discrepancies in their income tax returns. Speaking at the inauguration of the Income Tax Department's lounge at the India International Trade Fair (IITF), Agarwal highlighted the importance of voluntary compliance and the department’s proactive measures in identifying gaps using advanced data systems.
Automatic Exchange of Information: A Compliance Boost
Agarwal emphasized the department's use of the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) system, which provides regular updates on foreign assets and income. "This data is carefully matched with taxpayers' returns. Our goal is to inform and sensitize taxpayers about any discrepancies," he said.
The deadline for filing revised returns to address these gaps is December 31, 2024. Detailed guidance notes on relevant tax laws have been issued to assist taxpayers in rectifying omissions, many of which, Agarwal noted, stem from a lack of awareness.
Record-Breaking Direct Tax Collection Expected
On the broader front, Agarwal expressed confidence in surpassing the government's direct tax collection target of ₹22 lakh crore for the fiscal year. "We've already collected ₹12 lakh crore, and the trend indicates that we will exceed the target," he stated, attributing this success to the Indian economy’s robust growth and taxpayers' proactive compliance.
He credited the ₹12 lakh crore achievement to progressive government policies and a responsive taxpayer base, noting that a growing economy naturally fuels higher tax collections.
A Decade of Transformation in Taxpayer Services
Reflecting on the Income Tax Department’s evolving presence at IITF, Agarwal recounted its humble beginnings in 2008 with just three kiosks, an initiative he spearheaded during his tenure as Additional Commissioner of Income Tax.
"Today, our presence at the IITF symbolizes how far we’ve come in making taxpayer services accessible under one roof," he said. The department now offers a comprehensive range of services, demonstrating its commitment to improving taxpayer outreach and transparency.
Encouraging Voluntary Compliance
As the December 31 deadline approaches, Agarwal's message underscores the department’s dual focus on encouraging voluntary compliance and enhancing taxpayer engagement. The initiative not only aims to rectify discrepancies but also fosters trust and cooperation between taxpayers and the authorities.
For those with foreign income or assets, this is a timely reminder to review and revise their filings to ensure full compliance with tax laws.
