Tea Stall Worker in Gujarat Shocked After Receiving Rs 115 Crore Income Tax Notice

Last updated: 19 April 2025

As the financial year nears its end and salaried professionals across India gear up for tax filings, an unusual and baffling incident has emerged from Gujarat. A tea stall worker, Asif Mohammed, has reportedly received an income tax notice demanding a staggering ₹115 crore in tax dues.

Asif, who has been working at a hotel in Gir Somnath district for the past 25 years, earns a modest monthly salary of ₹10,000. Understandably, the notice left him completely shocked. According to his statement, he has only ₹475 in his bank account and has never engaged in any high-value transactions or business dealings that would warrant such a massive tax demand.

What makes this incident even more perplexing is that Asif has received similar notices from the Income Tax Department on three previous occasions. Each time, the amount involved has been astronomical, and each time, it has been a case of mistaken identity or data error.

This latest notice demanding ₹115 crore is being viewed as yet another error by the Income Tax Department, likely due to incorrect PAN linkage, Aadhaar mismatch, or technical glitches in the system. Authorities are expected to investigate the matter and resolve it soon.

Meanwhile, the absurdity of the situation has caught the attention of social media users, with many jokingly commenting on the irony. "If a chaiwala earning ₹10,000 a month is getting a notice for ₹115 crore, then how much should software engineers and CEOs expect?" quipped one user. Others have highlighted the need for the tax system to become more robust and error-free, especially as millions file their income tax returns before the March 31 deadline.

The incident has once again brought to light the importance of accurate data management and the necessity for individuals to monitor their tax records and PAN transactions regularly to avoid such distressing surprises.
