Tax pending after filing returns: how to?

This query is : Resolved

10 December 2012 I have tax pending after filing returns. I filed my returns in July itself and have about 18500 tax remaining. I want to know:

1. How do I calculate the total payable amount (including cess, penalty etc.)

2. While paying tax what Challan number should I use?

3. When filing revised returns do I still use ITR1.

4. Do I wait for demand letter from IT Dept or just go ahead and pay these taxes and file revised returns even if my original return hasn't been processed (only received)

10 December 2012 01. Revise the return before it is processed by CPC/ Assessing Officer.
02. Better if you pay the tax along with revised return.
03. Pay the tax by using self assessment tax challan.

10 December 2012 Thanks Amol. Can you also help me out with calculation of tax? What is the total amount I have to pay if pending tax was 18500. Would there be any penalty involved?

10 December 2012 The rules are in favour of Income Tax department. So no MATHEMATICAL aptitude really works with Dept. Pay on ad hoc basis. At least hence onwards interest will be reduced.

10 December 2012 So do I just pay the difference and file returns based on that? Wouldn't that mean that IT dept will come back and ask me for interest?

10 December 2012 FILL IN THE RETURN ONCE MORE. CLICK ON CALCULATE TAX. IT WILL COME AUTOMATICALLY.

10 December 2012 Thanks for helping out Soumitra!!
