Which department is authorised to do Service Tax Audit and assessment and under which section, also is there any time limit ti initate such proceedings

Now there is no assessment by the department. It is only self assessment. There is periodical audit by the department. The normal period of limitation is one year but can be extended upto five years in the case of suppression, mis-statement etc.
