If you are seeing a message that the Income Tax Department's (ITD) database shows that you may have been issued a PAN, but you never applied for one, it’s important to address this issue promptly. Here’s how you can handle it:
### **Steps to Resolve the PAN Issue**
1. **Check Existing PAN Status:** - **Verify PAN:** Use the PAN Verification Service on the [Income Tax India e-Filing website](https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/) to check if a PAN has already been issued in your name. This will provide you with the PAN number if one exists.
2. **Contact the PAN Issuing Authority:** - **Reach Out:** Contact the PAN issuing authority (UTIITSL or NSDL) to inform them of the situation. Explain that you have never applied for a PAN and that you are receiving conflicting information. - **Provide Details:** Share details like your name, date of birth, and address to help them investigate the issue.
3. **Submit a Request for PAN Verification:** - **Submit Form 49A:** If a PAN has indeed been issued incorrectly or fraudulently, you can fill out **Form 49A** (for PAN application) and submit it to the PAN issuing authority. This form allows you to apply for a new PAN or correct the existing details if you find that a PAN has been issued to you in error.
4. **File a Complaint with the Income Tax Department:** - **Contact the ITD:** File a complaint or query with the Income Tax Department through their [Grievance Redressal Portal](https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/). Provide all relevant details about the issue and your contact information. - **Email Communication:** You can also email the Income Tax Department at the designated email addresses provided on their website for PAN-related queries.
5. **Check for Identity Theft:** - **Monitor Accounts:** Ensure that your personal details have not been misused. Monitor your financial accounts and credit reports for any unusual activity.
**Document Everything:** - **Keep Records:** Keep a record of all communications with the PAN issuing authority and the Income Tax Department. This will be useful if you need to escalate the matter.
### **Preventive Measures:**
- **Safeguard Personal Information:** Ensure that your personal details are protected and not shared indiscriminately to prevent identity theft. - **Verify Before Submission:** Always verify the details before submitting any application or form.
Addressing this issue promptly is crucial to ensure that there are no complications with your identity and financial records.
