Sir, I have to deposit self assessment income tax at the branch of " state bank of India" in my locality. In past I made cash payment at the SBI counter through ITNS 280 challan. But now on 7th Januray 2016, I went to the same SBI branch but they are now refusing to accept cash payment of self assessment income tax. I went to Bank of Baroda Branch on the same day , they also refuse to accept income tax at counter , they said e- payment is compulsory. I am an individual assessee having propritorship business ( no requirement of tax audit). I am confused now. Is it mandatory to pay income tax online for everybody. or is it compulsory to pay through cheque at bank counter. BANK IS NOT ACCEPTING CASH PAYMENT AT COUNTER FOR INCOME TAX. Please reply

Though e-payment , in your case, is not compulsory, still it is advisable you to adopt the facilities of e-payment at your own place. We can not say anything about the aptitude bank baboos. Try on tomorrow, possibly they have refused due to over burden of TDS Challans.
