Since your father is no longer alive and you need to encash a National Savings Certificate (NSC) that was in his name, you will need to follow a specific process due to the fact that the NSC certificate was in his name. Here's a step-by-step guide on what to do:
### **1. Obtain the Death Certificate**
- **Death Certificate**: You will need to obtain a copy of your father’s death certificate, as this will be required to process any claims related to the NSC.
### **2. Legal Heir Certificate or Succession Certificate**
- **Legal Heir Certificate**: You should get a legal heir certificate from a local authority or court to prove that you are a legal heir of your father. This is important for the bank or post office to identify who is entitled to the maturity proceeds.
- **Succession Certificate**: In some cases, especially if there are multiple legal heirs or disputes, a succession certificate from the court may be required.
### **3. Visit the Issuing Post Office**
- **Post Office**: Visit the post office where the NSC was originally issued or where your father’s account was maintained. Inform them about the loss of the original NSC certificate and provide the photocopies.
### **4. Apply for Duplicate NSC**
- **Form for Duplicate NSC**: Request a form to apply for a duplicate NSC. Fill out the form accurately and provide the required documents.
- **Documents Required**: - Death certificate of the holder. - Legal heir certificate or succession certificate. - Photocopies of the lost NSC certificate. - Proof of identity and address of the claimant.
### **5. Affidavit and Indemnity Bond**
- **Affidavit**: You may need to provide an affidavit stating the loss of the original NSC and that you will indemnify the post office against any future claims.
- **Indemnity Bond**: The post office may require you to sign an indemnity bond, which is a legal document stating that you agree to compensate the post office in case the original NSC is found and claimed by someone else.
### **6. Encashment Process**
- **Verification**: After the application for a duplicate NSC is processed, the post office will verify the documents and issue a duplicate certificate.
- **Encashment**: Once you receive the duplicate NSC, you can then proceed to encash it. The maturity amount will be paid as per the terms of the NSC.
### **Summary**
To encash the NSC in your father’s name after his death, you will need to provide proof of his death, obtain a legal heir or succession certificate, and apply for a duplicate NSC at the post office with the necessary documentation. You may also need to complete an affidavit and indemnity bond. It’s advisable to check with the specific post office where the NSC was issued for any additional requirements or processes.
