This query is : Resolved

04 March 2021 i pay interest of rs 5000 on gst portal by bank how can i entry iton books of accounts

09 July 2024 When you pay interest on the GST portal through your bank, you'll need to make the appropriate accounting entries to reflect this transaction in your books. Here’s how you can record it:

### Assuming you're accounting on an accrual basis:

1. **Accounting Entry:**

- Debit: **Interest Expense Account** (This is an expense account on your Profit & Loss Statement)
- Credit: **Bank Account** (or whichever account was used to make the payment)

Example:
```
Interest Expense Account Dr. Rs. 5000
Bank Account Cr. Rs. 5000
```

### Assuming you're accounting on a cash basis:

If you account on a cash basis, you would record the payment when the cash is actually paid out, rather than when the expense is incurred. In this case, the entry would be:

- Debit: **Interest Expense Account**
- Credit: **Bank Account**

Example:
```
Interest Expense Account Dr. Rs. 5000
Bank Account Cr. Rs. 5000
```

### GST Input Tax Credit (ITC) on Interest Paid:

- Please note, GST paid on interest is generally not eligible for Input Tax Credit (ITC) unless the interest is related to a business loan or used directly in the course of business.

### Documentation:

- **Keep Proof of Payment:** Ensure you have proper documentation, such as a bank statement or transaction record from the GST portal, to support the entry in your books.

- **Consult with an Accountant:** If you're unsure about the correct treatment or have specific questions regarding GST implications or tax treatment, it's advisable to consult with an accountant or tax advisor who can provide guidance tailored to your business situation and compliance requirements.
