W.B. VAT @ 5% on ready-made garments. The price tag of ready-made garments reads M.R.P. inclusive of all taxes. Is it legally right for a vendor to charge VAT on M.R.P. (inclusive of all taxes)?? And if not right then what is the remedy against this (in my case VAT has been charged extra).

Mr Jatin B, Traders do many kinds of mischief. When it is marked on the label that MRP Rs....,inclusive of all taxes, necessary margin in price is given for the trader to cover all expected taxes,by a distributor or wholeseller. He should sell the goods at prices less or equal to MRP. When he fails the only way is a consumer court. A group of customers can join to file a suit in a consumer court.....mjk

Thank you Mr. Krishnamurthy for the reply. Though I have purchased many times from Pantaloons, but this is the first time, I noticed them charging VAT, as a board saying "VAT is extra" was on display at payment counter. Later I found in the price tags MRP (inclusive of all taxes). Can I alone move this to consumer forum if I don't find anyone to join hands?

You can do it alone also, but, it may become costly, unless you visit that shop repeatedly and use a consumer court order for future purchases....mjk
