Income Tax Department Stresses TDS Adherence for Mizos Despite Tax Exemption

Last updated: 22 November 2024

In a recent meeting held in Aizawl, the Income Tax Department reaffirmed that Mizos, as indigenous people residing in designated tribal areas, are exempt from income tax under Central Government laws. However, officials emphasized the importance of adhering to Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) regulations and obtaining a Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN).

Income Tax Department Stresses TDS Adherence for Mizos Despite Tax Exemption

Low TDS Compliance Among Mizos

Income Tax officials highlighted the low participation of Mizos in TDS-related compliance, particularly among government employees and banking institutions. They urged Drawing and Disbursing Officers (DDOs) in all departments to ensure proper deductions and timely filings as mandated by the law.

Importance of Reporting Financial Transactions

While Mizos enjoy tax exemption due to their tribal status, officials stressed the necessity of accurately reporting financial transactions, including bank deposits and withdrawals. Proper TDS compliance not only ensures legal protection but also fosters transparency in financial dealings.

Support for Tax Procedures

For guidance on tax-related processes, taxpayers and officials were encouraged to seek assistance at the department’s Aizawl Bawngkawn Brigade office. The office remains dedicated to providing support to ensure proper adherence to tax laws.

This initiative underscores the department's commitment to educating and assisting Mizos in understanding their obligations under TDS regulations, despite their income tax exemption status.
