The number of e-way bills generated in January 2025 reached an all-time high of 118.15 million, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), as reported by Informist. This marks a 5.5% increase from 112.02 million e-way bills generated in December 2024, which was the highest in the previous two years.
E-Way Bills as an Indicator of Economic Activity
Under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, transporters are required to generate an electronic way (e-way) bill for consignments valued at more than ₹50,000. The surge in e-way bill generation suggests increased business activity and improved economic conditions.

In comparison to January 2024, the latest figures represent a 23.1% year-on-year growth, highlighting the resilience of the Indian economy. The rise in e-way bills has also translated into higher GST collections, which grew 12.3% YoY to ₹1.96 trillion in January 2025.
Key Rule Changes Affecting E-Way Bills
Two major regulatory changes came into effect in January 2025 to improve compliance and curb tax evasion:
- Restriction on Backdated Invoices - Transporters can no longer generate e-way bills using base documents older than 180 days, preventing invoice backdating and fraudulent claims.
- Capping of E-Way Bill Extension Period - The maximum extension period for an e-way bill is now capped at 360 days from the date of generation, restricting indefinite extensions and ensuring timely movement of goods.
These changes are expected to bring greater transparency and efficiency in GST compliance while ensuring that businesses adhere to genuine invoicing and timely transportation of goods.
Outlook for February and Beyond
With GST collections consistently growing and e-way bill generation at record highs, the trend indicates strong demand and increased trade activity. Experts anticipate that if this momentum continues, GST revenues may further rise, providing fiscal stability and supporting India's economic expansion.
For businesses, staying updated with e-way bill regulations is crucial to avoid penalties and ensure smooth logistics operations.
