new student - help needed

hi everyone ,
my name is rahul agrawal and i am 26yrs old.
i am thinking to do ca and i would be needing
your help and guidance.
let me be frank with you,i was a average student
throughout school and college.i did my graduation in 2006.
i plan to give cpt on june 2011.i will be doing self study
with no outside coaching at all.
i have no idea of maths, last i studied the subject was
in class 8th in which i miserably failed.
though i am familiar with accounts, economics and mercantile law
but i am not confident in any of the subjects since its been 4 years
i touched any of the books.
i would request all of you to guide me through the path to become a ca.
i have been browsing thoroughly through the site for the past week
and i found people recommending suchitra prakashan's cpt scanner and tulsian's books
i bought the scanners but i think i would be needing a lot of practice
in accounts and specially in maths(quantitative aptitude).
i would ask you all to please recommend me books for maths(quantitative aptitude).
since i have zero background knowledge about the subject so i need books that
could help me understand the basic concepts of the topics and should have lots
of solved and unsolved questions so i could practice to gain confidence
in the subject.
similarly for accounts i need books that could help me in practicing the
topics.
since i do know i was quite weak in studies throughout my life,i plan to
dedicate myself seriously in studies eveyday from now on until i get the title of
ca before my name.
i was thinking of registering for the december cpt examinations to get
the idea of question paper pattern and to get the icai books
on all the subjects,so i need your recommendations there as to
should i register or not(does it show/mention it my track record or certificate
about the number of attempts.
i need suggestions on model test papers or collection of
previous years test papers.
i would also ask you all to provide me with any online material,
website name, forums, blogs or youtube sort of videos that could proove
helpful in my journey.
any advice, suggestion or recommendations are welcome from your side,
i look for your guidance on studying strategy as well.
any tips on motivation and concentration could also prove helpful.
thanks a lot.

queries:
->is there any limit to no. of attempts or duration of gap between cpt and ipcc{2nd level} and final.
(i read somewhere in this website that a person completed his ca in 14yrs).

->i scored 49% in my bcom and 47% in 12th so will i still qualify for the exams(some degrees require you
to score atleast 50% in graduation)

->what is the format of the exams for each subject.are the questions objective type or multiple
choice questions or do we have to solve the whole topics in paper for subject like accounts &
quantitative aptitude and write the whole theoritical answer for subjects like economics
and mercantile law.also us the student expected to mention the dates and sections in mercantile law
and draw graphs in economics.

PS.
books i bought till now are
suchitra prakasha's scanners for
Economics,Mercantile law and Quantitative aptitude
and
Tulsian's Fundamentals of Accounting

yeh ma sugestion u forgt abt maths n concentrate only rest subject n use icai study material n scanner both i also used these books

hI Rahul!!!

Well looks like you are ready for some serious studies!!

N if u r ready to put in efforts u Will Become a CA!!

YOU seem to be tensed about Maths!

wELL I SUGGEST U DO ONLY THE TOPICS WHICH U FEEL ARE EASY IN MATHS,

remaining u can leave!

Focus on the remaining three subjects.U can buy the model test papers by ICAI.That will be helpful for getting practice.

And ya no one will ever know how many attempts you took to pass CPT or PCC or Final CA .So dont worry about that.

Also, your scores of other courses you mentioned are also irrelevant.

Best of luck !

God bless!

thankyou for replying so quick khushboo

but you see i dont want to leave any subject totally.

i think some knowledge of all the subjects would be required.

i read people leaving maths completely and still passing cpt but then what happens in the later stages-do they get through the finals?.what if i am to answer any maths(quantitative aptitude)questions in an interview or any other entrance exams like mba etc.

plus maths has been haunting me like forever and now i want to face my fears and get over with it.

thankyou abhishek for your suggestions.

i have to say it releives me of a bit of my tension.

any further suggestions are always welcome

This the first time i am writing something on this site

My age is 27yrs.  I am IPCC student  .

I cleared my CPT in june 2009 with 140 marks out of 200

my paper was objective type.

Firstly i did self study, than took the coaching from a local ca for 1& 1/2 month.

i did my studies from b.com books also.(study material is must)

my paper was easy , if u can analysis u can clear it very easily.

i did the maths 25 question only on the basis of my analysis (but u should know whether it is good for u  or not)

CONCEPT CLEARLTY IS MUST.

AT THAT TIME I  STUDIED FOR  3 MONTHS ONLY.

see the ppt lectures on www.cashiksha.com/

register urself for that also.

it is good if u can take coaching because my experance is that if u study with a group u are motivated to acheive something..& also it makes ur concept very very strong

self study sometimes creates problem after 1 or two weeks u r not motivated to study for another day(but it depend upon person to person)

Rahul,

you must do Maths also, Statistics you must do as it is not that much difficult....and weightage is also more in cpt maths section.....

as you said you are aware of accounts, economics and mercantile law , so you can prepare for cpt easily as your attempt is in june2011....

i would advice you to take coaching for maths rather than self study........

All the best.....

The paper is of MCQ questions.......

50 in maths,50 in economics,60 in accounts and 40 in mercantile law........

Each question contains 1 mark..

If you mark wrong answer .25 i.e. 25% of 1 mark will be deducted as negative marking...

you must stick to study material.....

ITS ALL ABOUT YOUR DEDICATION YAAR.

thankyou ashish for your reply.

i certainly think your recommendation of www.cashiksha.com would prove helpful to me.

also i do see your point of joining the coaching classes but since i am working too so i wont be able to

commit to any time bound coaching classes, however  i would try to keep my spirits high.

read my article on tips fr cpt students ...might help u

hey vikrant,

thankyou for your  guidance on the topic of maths now i could start with that.

and also helping me understand the paper pattern and marks breakup.

i m suggesting u that concetrare on law & accounts both r very simple & u can get better marks thenafter economics. if have some time then maths otherwise kick it.

if u work hard then u will get command on math, stats

how much you scored in Bcom and 12th doesnt matter

There are some frinds of mine who wasnt good in Bcom and 12th but did well in CA Exams

So Just be confident and work hard
