Tax return filling for nri?

This query is : Resolved

23 March 2012 I am working as engineer in merchant navy I have always maintained my NRI STATUS ie more than 182 days out of india every year, also all my income is coming in NRE ACCOUNT from my company. so CLEARLY MY SALARY IS NOT TAXABLE BUT STILL DO I NEED TO FILE INCOME TAX AS ZERO RETURNS?
Also if i am having less than 1.5 lakh income every year which comes to my NRO account FROM RENT IN INDIA. DO I NEED TO FILE IT RETURNS?

PLEASE ADVICE ?
REGARDS
SAMEER ANAND

23 March 2012 In my opinion, you should not file return as your income is below exemption limit as well your status is NRI.

But Return would be of great advantage if you want to avail any loan in future.

Others opinion will be solicited

23 March 2012 In case of filling the tax my company says that they cannot provide form 16 as i have completed my nri time and they can only give me a letter stating that i was on their ship abroad for 182+ days. with this letter how to file income tax. can somebody give a CA contact number who can help in NOIDA ?
ALSO HAS THERE BEEN ANY NEW CHANGES FOR NRI/ MERCHANT NAVY IN REGARD TO INCOME TAX IN BUDGET 2012 - 13?

23 March 2012 Mr. Sameer,

Now a days, You can file your return without form 16 also. Even in your case TDS is not deducted (assumed). Then why are you worried about filling of Return.

If your status got changed from NRI to Resident in current year then you need to offer your Salary income to tax.

Thanks
Mihir Doshi
