19 November 2013 Dear Sir,

Is LBT applicable on acquiring visiting cards which are given as a printing job ?

10 December 2013 Any updates please

03 August 2024 Local Body Tax (LBT) was a tax levied by municipal authorities on goods within certain urban areas in India. However, it was abolished in most places and replaced by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) starting from July 1, 2017. The specifics of LBT, including its applicability and rates, were subject to local municipal regulations and varied from city to city.

### **Acquiring Visiting Cards and LBT:**

Under the framework of LBT (when it was applicable):

1. **Applicability of LBT:** LBT typically applied to the sale of goods within the municipal area. For services such as printing jobs, the applicability of LBT would depend on the specific provisions of the local body’s tax regulations at the time. Printing services could be subject to LBT if the tax was applicable to service transactions.

2. **Goods vs. Services:** Visiting cards, while technically a good (printed material), were produced through a service (printing). The local regulations would determine whether the printing service was subject to LBT.

### **Post-GST Scenario:**

Since the introduction of GST, LBT has largely been replaced. GST is now the comprehensive tax applicable on goods and services, including printing services.

- **Printing Services and GST:** Under GST, printing services, including the printing of visiting cards, fall under the category of **taxable services**. The applicable GST rate on printing services is **12%** (as of the latest rates).

- **GST on Visiting Cards:** The supply of visiting cards, which is a printed good, would be covered under GST. The printer issuing the visiting cards would charge GST on the service provided.

### **Key Points for GST:**

1. **GST Registration:** If the printer is registered under GST, they will include GST on their invoice for the visiting cards.

2. **Input Tax Credit (ITC):** Businesses can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on GST paid for business-related purchases, including printing services.

3. **Documentation:** Ensure you receive a proper GST-compliant invoice for the printing job to claim ITC and comply with GST regulations.

### **Summary:**

- **LBT Applicability:** LBT, if applicable at the time, might have applied to printing services, but it is largely irrelevant now due to GST.
- **Current Status:** Under GST, the printing of visiting cards is subject to a GST rate of 12%.
- **Action Required:** Ensure GST compliance by obtaining a GST invoice and maintaining records as per GST requirements.

Always refer to the latest GST regulations or consult a tax professional to ensure compliance with current tax laws.
