I would like to know whether the last date of filing Income Tax return of Individuals in case of refunds has been extended to 31st March, 2009? Because I have heard that this has been announced recently. Is it true?

I don't think what you say is true. If no further tax is payable along with the return, you can file it before the end of the relevant A.Y i.e., 31-03-2008 if the return relates to AY 2007-08. You have one more year's time i.e., upto 31-03-2009 to file your return u/s 139(4) - belated return. If a refund is due and you don't file the return even by 31-03-2009, you may not be able to file the return anymore unless you get an approval from the Commissioner concerned.

TO MY KNOWLEDGE NO SUCH EXTENTION IS ANNOUNCED AS OF NOW. FILING OF IT RETURN BY DUE DATE( IT RETURN OF INDIVIDUALS NOT SUBJECT TO TAX AUDIT IS DUE ON 31 ST JULY -07) HELPS CLAIM REFUNDS AND INCASE OF A NEED TO FILE A REVISED RETURN. IF THESE TWO CIRCUMSTANCES DONT APPLY, ONE CAN FILE IT RETURN BY 31 ST MARCH 2008 ( FOR ASST YEAR 2007-08) C.A.R.V.RAO
