26 October 2013 Dear Sir

I am paying the house rent at two places as below:-
1. Paying house rent Rs.9500/- at Chandigarh where i am doing my job.
2. Paying house rent Rs.7000/- at Kanpur where my wife and children staying/or studying .

Now i want to know that can i claim the HRA exemption for both or not.

Satish Kumar

26 October 2013 No. You cannot claim exemption against the rent paid in Kanpur. However, if you have been transferred to Kanpur to Chandigarh, you may ask your employer to structure your salary to convert a portion of HRA to transfer allowance, which is exempt under Rule 2BB(1)(a).

26 October 2013 Dear Sir

Upto which limit or amount transfer allowance is exempt from Tax per month.
and secondly can i avail exemption for HRA and transfer allowance for both on monthly basis.

Regards
Satish sharma

27 October 2013 Mr Satish! You wish to to keep ladoo in both hands - which is not possible.

HRA can be claimed if anyone is paying rent at the place of job.

There is no limit but the benefit amount is calculated by considering your basic salaries, rent paid, HRA received and city of job.
