House rent

This query is : Resolved

03 March 2014 Sir, a flat is registered in the name of husband & wife jointly for which payment was made in full by husband by a/c pay cheque from the bank a/c in the joint names of husband & wife. There was not contribution made from wife's account.

Can a son pay rent to his mother - considereing the case of no contribution from mother's a/c for the flat purchase? Whether any deed is required or simply rent receipt will be sufficient enough to claim house rent allowance by the son ?

An answer to my mail judaipuria@yahoo.com will be highly solicited.

03 March 2014 You can claim deduction of rent paid to your mother.

1. Enter into a proper agreement with your mother.
2. Pay monthly through cheque.
3. Obtain your mother's PAN if the annual rent exceeds Rs. 1 lakhs.
4. Ensure that your mother shows rental income in her income tax return.
