Exemption on medical expenses

18 July 2017 A salaried income individual had not received reimbursement from her employers by submitting bills. She was not paid any Medical Allowance. She is not having any Medical Claim Policy. Can she claim Medical Expenses in her Return

18 July 2017 Yes. She can claim Medical Expenses in her return as follows
1.u/s 80DD - Deduction in respect of maintenance including medical treatment of a dependent person with disability. he expenditure could be actual or paid or deposited with LIC/Other Insurer subject to certain conditions. The deduction available is a maximum of Rs. 75,000/- unless it is a severe disability in which case the deduction will be Rs. 1,25,000/-. Disability certificate will be required from a medical practitioner.
2. 80DDB - Deduction in respect of medical treatment for specified ailments of self or a dependent upto a maximum of Rs. 40,000/-. The amount will be Rs. 60,000/- if it is in relation to a senior citizen, and Rs. 80,000/- for a very senior citizen. The deduction is to be allowed only against prescription from a neurologist, oncologist, urologist, haematologist, immunologist or such other specialist prescribed.
