EGM stands for "Export General Manifest." It is a document filed by the shipping carrier (like a shipping line or an agent) with the customs authorities. The EGM contains details of all shipments (containers or goods) that are loaded onto the vessel for export. It includes information such as the exporter's name, shipping bill numbers, container numbers, description of goods, quantity, and destination port.
The EGM serves several purposes: 1. **Customs Clearance:** It helps customs authorities verify the export cargo against the shipping bill details. 2. **Manifestation:** It manifests all cargo loaded on the vessel for export. 3. **Statistical Data:** It provides statistical data related to exports for government records.
**Process and Timeline:** After the shipping bill and the Bill of Lading (BL) are received by the shipping carrier, they compile the information into the EGM and submit it to the customs electronically. The timeline for updating the shipping bill status after receiving the shipping bill and BL can vary:
- **Immediate Updates:** In some cases, updates to the shipping bill status may be immediate or within a few hours of submission of the EGM to customs. - **Processing Time:** The actual processing time by customs to update the shipping bill status in their system after receiving the EGM can vary based on factors such as the workload at the customs office, completeness of documents, and any inspections required.
