Dear Experts Inrespect of a salaried employee who's brother is handicaped and it is 70% and the employee deposited Rs 1 lakh FD for one year in the name of his handicaped brother.Whether any deduction for this can be cliamed by the employee Thanks in advance Rgds
As per 80DD,dependent handicap brother is eligible to cover under the definition relative.but only following expenses can claim as deduction 1)Expenditure for the medical treatment (including nursing), training and rehabilitation of a disabled dependent. 2)Money paid to Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), Unit Trust of India or any other insurer for the purpose of buying specified scheme or insurance for the purpose of maintenance of such dependant.
so I don't think 1 lakh FD for one year will be eligible to get deduction.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Can you please clarify what are the documents to be submitted for claiming deduction for expenditure incurredf or nursing a handicaped dependant, particularly , no additional expenses incurred by the eployee other than usual expenses such as food , cloth, shelter and support. In otherwords whether the employee can claim deduction if , the employee actually incurring ependiture for the handicaped dependendent. But no proof other than the Kerala Govt's Identity card specifying him as handicaped person and having disability of 70% Rgds
