what is a basic diff between contractor & sub contractor ?

The primary contractor is responsible for the entire project and coordinating the efforts of the subcontractors. The subcontractors are responsible for specific trades

Contractor is the person who undertake a work.He is responsible for whole the work
Sub contractor means a part of work which is assigned to him by the main contractor.
Sub contractor means a part of work which is assigned to him by the main contractor.

Contractor is a person to whom contract work has been given and who is responsible to the principal and he will be held responsible for any wrong doing .
whereas a sub -contractor is appointed by the contractor for doing a part of work assigned to him . A sub-contractor usually have no direct nexus to principal
