LAN / WAN / MAN are the network scopes. For example all the computers within a network can be connected through LAN.
If comapny want to connect any outside computer to its network, then WAN will be used.
As regards VPN (virtual private network), this is given by company to its employees to access LAN from remote login (i.e. without physically being present on LAN).
