For a newly qualified CA; the question raised by you is very important.
If a wrong step is taken; the direction of whole career will go on that side. It will be difficult to bear the effect thereof after a span of 5 years.
I have seen one senior CA who left Birlas and joined another unknown limited company which offered somewhat high package at that time. The result is that he is just receiving a package of Rs.9.00 lacs p.a. despite having experience of 27 years!
Your career depends upon your excellency in any of the subject specially Audit, Taxation - Direct or Indirect, Project Finance, Cost Accounting, Management etc.
In each of the area described hereinabove; different areas emerge.
For example in Income-Tax : Return filing, Scrutiny Handling, Tax Planning and Appeal Filing.
If you are expert in one of the subject in which you were trained; then of course very good career is there in practice. It will give you more self-respect and job satisfaction. After a span of around 25-30 years; you will be known by your name in the city. If you perform extraordinarily; you will be known in your state or even in India !
There is no substitute of practice for a "properly trained" qualified person. Have you heard a Doctor saying that he wish to employ himself in a good hospital?
However; job looks lucrative now-a-days to young CAs because CA enjoy good infrastrucutre facilities and good exposure of work immediately. Their performance is well accepted by the management also.
Similarly; if you join a big firm of Chartered Accountants; soon you will also touch heights in the profession if you commit yourself for that.
It depends upon one's ability to mould the THREATS into OPPORTUNITIES. CAs have that much ca-libre.
