Income Tax Dept Rolls Out "TAXASSIST" to Guide Taxpayers, Flag Errors & Ensure Compliance

Last updated: 04 July 2025

The Income Tax Department has introduced "TAXASSIST", a comprehensive taxpayer support initiative aimed at simplifying income tax compliance and providing timely assistance during the ITR filing season for Assessment Year 2025-26.

This initiative is designed to guide taxpayers in navigating notices, verifying claims, and responding accurately to departmental communications-especially at a time when artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics are being intensively used to detect discrepancies.

What is "TAXASSIST"?

TAXASSIST acts as your digital helpdesk for resolving common ITR issues, such as:

  • Receiving alerts or notices related to mismatched or suspicious deduction claims.
  • Filing revised or updated returns (ITR-U).
  • Understanding legal consequences of incorrect deductions.
  • Accessing guidance to comply with documentation requirements.
  • Receiving reminders for critical tax deadlines.

Key Focus: Wrongful Claims under Section 80GGC

A major red flag this year is the misuse of Section 80GGC, which allows deductions for donations made only by individuals-not businesses-to registered political parties. Taxpayers falsely claiming this deduction are being flagged under AI-driven scrutiny.

Common Scenarios and TAXASSIST Solutions

Claimed 80GGC by Mistake?

  • File a revised return or ITR-U
  • Pay due taxes and interest
  • Return any excess refund received
  • Avoid scrutiny or penalty-correct it before it costs you

Fraudulent 80GGC Claims Include

  • Fake political donations
  • Donations made without proper documentation
  • Claims filed merely to get refunds

These actions amount to tax evasion and may lead to legal consequences.

Made a Genuine Donation?

  • Ensure the political party is legally registered
  • Keep valid donation receipts and bank proof
  • Be ready to submit supporting documents if required

Proper compliance helps secure your deduction.

Why It Matters

The Income Tax Department is now matching taxpayers' claims with third-party data from banks, mutual funds, and government records using AIS and SFT databases. Incorrect or unsupported deductions are auto-flagged.

Taxpayers are urged to respond promptly to any communication and use TAXASSIST to resolve concerns. Ignoring such notices may lead to scrutiny, penalties, or prosecution.

The last date to file income tax returns for non-audit taxpayers is September 15, 2025.
