GST Fraud Crackdown: Commissioner Unveils New Tactics, Biometric Tech to Catch Masterminds

Last updated: 18 October 2024

Since the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, a sophisticated scam has flourished, exploiting systemic loopholes and siphoning thousands of crores from the exchequer each year. Despite hundreds of fraudsters being apprehended, the masterminds behind the operations remain elusive, according to sources within the enforcement agencies.

The GST scam capitalizes on the complexities of enforcement across multiple states, regions, and languages. Fraudsters establish fake companies, issue bogus invoices, and misuse input tax credits, enabling them to illegally claim substantial refunds. These fraudulent companies often shut down and disappear within months, making it challenging for authorities to track down the real culprits.

GST Fraud Crackdown: Commissioner Unveils New Tactics, Biometric Tech to Catch Masterminds

"In Karnataka alone, we shut down over 1,000 fake companies annually, only to see new ones reappear. If we don't catch them within six months, they vanish, and the trail goes cold," explained a senior official. The difficulty lies in locating the masterminds, who often operate from different regions, making enforcement a logistical nightmare.

Despite these challenges, Karnataka's Commercial Tax Commissioner, C. Shikha, stated that the department is intensifying its efforts. New investigative tactics, including the use of biometric technology, are being employed in a nationwide crackdown to target fraudsters more effectively. Karnataka's latest operation, initiated on August 16, 2024, identified 1,193 phantom firms, blocked Rs 300 crore in false claims, and recovered Rs 14 crore so far.

These actions follow similar large-scale operations in 2022 and 2023, which uncovered fraudulent claims worth hundreds of crores. While the tax department has made strides in combating this scam, the battle is far from over. Fraudsters continue to stay ahead by utilizing fake IDs and rapidly dissolving their operations. Officials have called for tougher laws and enhanced coordination between states to stop this ongoing drain on government revenue.

As the crackdown continues, the government hopes that innovative enforcement tactics and stricter penalties will help curb the rise of fraudulent companies operating within the GST framework.
