FM Nirmala Sitharaman Urges IT Department to Address Tax Refund Delay Complaint

Last updated: 07 October 2024

On October 4, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called on the Income Tax department to address a complaint raised by a taxpayer who has faced delays in receiving a tax refund. Responding to a post on X (formerly Twitter), a user highlighted that his wife has been awaiting a tax refund of Rs 52,000 for the 2023-2024 tax filing, despite following up multiple times with the IT department.

The user shared an email sent to the IT department on September 17, outlining the issue and expressing frustration over the delay. He has since posted several messages addressed to the Income Tax department, Finance Ministry, and Prime Minister's Office, urging for a resolution. According to his most recent update, the user received only one call from the IT department five days ago, but the refund has yet to be processed.

Responding to the post, Sitharaman asked the IT department to look into the matter, highlighting the importance of fairness and timely action for taxpayers. The Finance Minister has previously stressed the need for the IT department to use simple language in tax notices, ensuring that they are easy to understand for the average taxpayer.

In August, she emphasized that tax notices should be less technical and more taxpayer-friendly, calling for proportional enforcement measures. Sitharaman has advocated for a faceless, fair, and amiable tax system, noting that taxpayers should have a consistent experience throughout the filing process, without feeling intimidated.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the efficiency of the tax refund process and the need for improved communication between the tax authorities and taxpayers.
