The Central Government has issued a critical advisory to taxpayers regarding a new wave of phishing scams involving fraudulent income tax refund messages. According to government sources, scammers are sending deceptive messages that claim the recipient is entitled to a tax refund. These messages, which may appear convincing, state that a refund has been approved and will soon be credited to the recipient's bank account. However, they contain a malicious link prompting recipients to update their bank account details. Clicking this link can compromise sensitive financial information, leading to potential cyber-crime.
Income Tax Department's Clarification
In response, the Income Tax Department has emphasized that such messages are not sent by their official channels. Taxpayers are urged to verify any refund claims exclusively through official tax department channels to avoid falling victim to these scams. Scammers often use fake email IDs to mislead individuals and may engage on social media platforms under the guise of addressing grievances.
How to Identify and Avoid Scams
Officials recommend being vigilant for common red flags, such as unsolicited calls, emails, or messages claiming to be from tax authorities and promising large refunds. Particularly suspicious are any communications requesting personal information or creating a sense of urgency. The Income Tax Department clarifies that they never request sensitive details like PAN numbers, Aadhar numbers, or bank account information via email or SMS.
"Be cautious of clicking on links from unsolicited messages or emails. Legitimate communication from the IT Department will not ask for personal details via these channels. If you suspect you’ve been targeted by a scam, report it immediately to the police," advised an official.
Taxpayers are encouraged to stay informed and verify any suspicious communications through official resources to safeguard their personal and financial information.
