In a heartbreaking incident, Sandeep Paswan, a 33-year-old Chartered Accountant from Jharkhand, allegedly took his own life at his rented home in Govandi, just minutes after broadcasting a distressing live video on Facebook. Paswan accused his fiancée, Sapna Paswan, and her family of framing him in a stalking case, assaulting him, and extorting ₹12.5 lakh from him.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the police reveal that Sandeep had tendencies of suicide in the last year or so, and friends had complained to the authorities of his strange demeanour during the live chat. Tragically, they were only able to locate him after he had already passed away.
In his final broadcast, which has since been viewed by thousands, Sandeep displayed visible bruises and a torn T-shirt, alleging that he had been subjected to physical abuse. "They told me, 'Why are you still alive? Just die, or we will kill you. They have humiliated me and ruined my life,'" he stated, expressing his desperation.
The Deonar police have registered an accidental death case, but following the discovery of his Facebook Live video, they are also considering charges of abetment to suicide against Sandeep's fiancée and her family.
Earlier, Sandeep had approached the legal channel to seek redressal of the financial issue saying that the police had not acted in a proper manner. Even though he was taken through counselling and told by police not to make any drastic steps, the incident has raised concern about the availability and effectiveness of psychiatric help and the involvement of police in similar occurrences.
What this case brings to mind is the primal necessity of early intervention in cases of domestic quarrels and the significance of the mental health issue. As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a young professional whose life ended in despair.
